In 2014, the St John Mother and Baby Programme was launched in Malawi and Zambia.
Within a few years, the programme expanded into other areas of Malawi and Zambia in order to bring healthcare closer to those who live in rural areas, as well as expanding into two other countries where St John operates – Uganda and Zimbabwe.
In these four countries, mother and child mortality rates are among the highest in the world. Infections and diseases like pneumonia, malaria or diarrhoea are the main causes, together with premature and low-weight birth, lack of hygiene or a safe place during labour and delivery.
The simple fact is that most of these deaths can be prevented by easy, available and cost effective solutions, as long as pregnant women and new mothers with infants get the right health care at the right time.
